Perhaps my most critical skill is my ability to identify and implement strategic partnerships with companies whose offerings are complementary to those I’m working to promote.

An important – but often overlooked – aspect of being a successful manager is the ability to lead your co-workers and/or employees. Management is not just about what you know, but how well you impart that knowledge to your co-workers. Over the course of my career in management, I have mentored countless employees and co-workers.

As the president and editor-in-chief of Inside Hockey, I’ve mentored dozens of young hockey writers and photographers. In its 10+ years of existence, Inside Hockey has proven to be a fantastic launching pad for young journalists, and members of the Inside Hockey team have gone on to play key roles at many high-profile media companies and professional sports franchises, including ESPN, The YES Network, The Toronto Globe & Mail, and the Detroit Red Wings.

As a professor at Suffolk University, my courses focus on marketing, web development, and other related skills. That teaching experience has unquestionably served me well in my business exploits, making it possible for me to impart knowledge more quickly and efficiently. In addition to helping students to find internships and (after graduation) full-time employment, I have also volunteered time to assist student groups and to help students with independent entrepreneurial projects.

I volunteered for the National Mentoring Partnership while at Citibank, mentoring a young student who lived (at the time) in the projects in Long Island City. That relationship continues to this day (albeit long-distance), as she’s now a college student living in Florida.

No matter how large or small a company’s budget, it’s always possible to organize events that will boost morale and keep employees active and engaged. Here are some examples…

Brought group of ~25 GeoCities’ employees to a Los Angeles Kings game (1999).

Organized an outing for GeoCities’ NYC office to the premiere of Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999).

Arranged an outing for Net4Music employees to see Cuban music legend Compay Segundo perform in New York City (2000).

Regularly hosted house parties for Net4Music employees (1999-2001).

Regularly organizes outings for Inside Hockey employees to discuss strategies and build team morale (2002-present).
